Use this guide to measure recorded answers or generated model outputs. For typed probability outputs, use Compare decision models. Select the two chat models and a fraud eval set in the conversation. For probability outputs, use decision-model comparison. What you get: Frozen comparable runs, paired results and examples explaining their differences. The steps below describe the workflow your agent follows and the results to verify.

1. Pin the data and checks

Inspect an eval dataset and choose its exact cell. Confirm that model inputs exclude the reference answer. Create or select eval matrix rows, then a named eval set if needed. Use create_eval_matrix_row for a deterministic script or a one-sentence llm expectation. Use create_eval_set(rows=[...]) to group row IDs. Existing runs retain their frozen matrix when definitions change.

2. Define the comparison

Build targets for check_evaluation_readiness and run_evaluation:
  • mode="recorded" scores the dataset’s recorded outputs.
  • mode="generate" generates outputs with model_name or model_ref.
  • Mark one target is_baseline=true when comparing changes.
Use consistent data, reference handling, generation parameters and explanation judge across the comparison. The judge_model field selects the model that explains low scores; it does not replace Jev’s expectation scoring.

3. Check and launch

Call check_evaluation_readiness with dataset, cell, eval_set, targets, optional judge_model and project_id. Resolve technical incompatibilities. Review context and cost estimates; context warnings are advisory and do not change the selected model. Call run_evaluation with the same configuration, a name and deliberate max_items/sampling values. This starts work and returns one run per target in a shared group. Poll the returned jobs; submitting again creates another evaluation. Standalone evaluations are launched through MCP or REST. The Console displays results; it is not the standalone launch path described here.

4. Inspect results before choosing a winner

Use compare_evaluations with the candidate run and its baseline. Read the paired count, wins, losses, ties and metric deltas alongside coverage and technical failures. Open individual run rows to inspect input, reference, model output and score reasons. A truncated generation or grading failure is not a quality zero. A high average over a small surviving subset does not establish a successful comparison. If a criterion is wrong, correct its source and start a new run. Do not reinterpret an old frozen run as if it used the replacement check. See Evaluation reference for target fields and row contracts.
